MOVIES & SERIESThe Surprising Connection Between Mena Massoud and Daniel
Raised in a Coptic Christian family, the ‘Aladdin’ star says portraying the young prophet in ‘Daniel and the Fiery Furnace’ became more than another acting role—it was the biblical story he believes he was meant to tell.
Long before he portrayed Daniel on screen, Mena Massoud grew up hearing the prophet’s story.
Like many believers, he mostly remembered the lions’ den.
But when the opportunity came to portray the young prophet in Daniel and the Fiery Furnace, the biblical epic from EKKL Entertainment coming to theaters this fall, Massoud discovered there was another chapter of Daniel’s story worth telling.
“A lot of Christians know Daniel as Daniel in the lions’ den, and Daniel is an older man. At least that’s kind of my image of him before I came to this project,” he noted.
But what intrigued Massoud wasn’t the familiar ending of Daniel’s story. It was the beginning.
“Biblically, we know that he started off in Babylon as part of the exiles… How does he come to that role?”
That’s the question Daniel and the Fiery Furnace sets out to answer.
Rather than beginning with Daniel’s famous deliverance from the lions’ den, the film explores the years that shaped his character—his exile, his friendships, his unwavering faith, and the choices that prepared him to become one of the Bible’s most recognizable heroes.
Faith in a Foreign Land
Massoud knows what it means to hold tightly to his faith and heritage.
Born in Egypt, he immigrated to Canada with his family when he was just 3½ years old after his parents decided it was time to seek a safer future.
“We’re Coptic Christian and my parents just felt like things were getting a little too dangerous when I was growing up in Egypt,” he explained in an interview. “They wanted to create a better life for their family, so they decided to immigrate to Canada.”
Even after moving, his family intentionally preserved the traditions they had brought with them.
“When we immigrated to Canada, my family basically refused to speak English in the house,” he recalled. “I went to church three times a week, and there I would hang out with my Egyptian friends most of the time. We basically had our Egyptian community there.”
Years later, Massoud reflected on the unique challenge of growing up between two cultures.
“You know, that’s a tough thing,” he said during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. “I think for any immigrant you never feel like you’re 100%… Like I never felt like I was 100% Egyptian, 100% Canadian.”
Daniel’s story begins in much the same way—not in a lions’ den, but as a young exile learning to remain faithful in a foreign land while navigating a culture that stood in stark contrast to his own.
The Story He Was Meant to Tell
Following the global success of Aladdin, Massoud continued pursuing meaningful roles while navigating the unpredictability that often comes with an acting career. Along the way, opportunities to step into biblical stories continued to arise.
Although several projects had come close, none ultimately came together. Looking back, Massoud believes there was a reason.
“Over the last few months, I’ve come close to being part of several Biblical retellings,” he said in an Instagram post, “but it’s clear God wanted this to be my first, and for that I’ll forever be grateful.”
When the film’s first teaser was released, Massoud introduced it with a simple description:
“We are honored to share the long-awaited teaser for Daniel—a story of faith that refuses to bow.”
It’s a fitting description of the prophet who remained faithful in exile—and of the story Massoud believes he was always meant to tell.
