Our September Watchlist: What We’re Watching on EKKL This Month
From inspiring true stories to second chances, unexpected convictions and relationships that take the road less traveled, these five movies and series give us plenty to watch—and plenty to think about this September.
The best stories don’t just give us somewhere to escape for a couple of hours. They give us something to carry with us.
A reminder to stand firm. A second chance. A difficult truth. A glimpse of what can happen when one person decides to live differently.
That’s what caught our attention about this month’s EKKL lineup.
Every month, the Connect team highlights a handful of movies and series we’re especially excited to share with you. These five stories take very different paths, but each one leaves something behind.
Here’s what we’re watching on EKKL this September
🏈 Woodlawn
Sometimes one person’s faith can change an entire team.
Set against the racial tensions of 1970s Birmingham, Woodlawn follows a high school football team whose season takes an unexpected turn when a traveling evangelist challenges the players to embrace faith, forgiveness and unity. Based on a true story, the film explores what can happen when faith takes hold far beyond the walls of a church.
Why we picked it: Woodlawn is ultimately about transformation—not just on the football field, but in a community. It’s a powerful reminder that faith can cross barriers and change the atmosphere around us.
❤️ Lifemark
One phone call changes everything.
When David’s birth mother unexpectedly reaches out years after placing him for adoption, he faces a decision that could change the course of his life. What begins as a difficult reunion becomes a story about identity, forgiveness and the complicated beauty of family.
Why we picked it: Lifemark doesn’t shy away from difficult emotions. Instead, it explores how forgiveness and grace can make room for healing—and how sometimes the hardest conversations can lead somewhere beautiful.
🙏 Average Joe
What happens when standing up for what you believe comes at a cost?
Average Joe follows a high school football coach whose faith and convictions put his career at risk. Inspired by a true story, the film explores what it means to stand firm when doing what you believe is right could cost you everything.
Why we picked it: It’s an underdog story with a faith-driven heart—and a reminder that courage isn’t always about winning. Sometimes it’s simply about refusing to back down.
❤️ Old Fashioned
Can you build a relationship differently in a culture that tells you to move faster?
Old Fashioned follows a former partyer who has chosen a different approach to relationships and the woman who challenges him to reconsider what love, trust and commitment really look like.
Why we picked it: The film offers a thoughtful look at intentional relationships, boundaries and the choices we make when we’re willing to go against the cultural norm.
⚖️ Vindication
Justice doesn’t always come with easy answers.
This faith-based crime drama follows Detective Gary Travis as he investigates difficult cases while navigating the moral questions that come with his work, his family and his faith.
Why we picked it: Vindication brings faith into a genre where it’s not always expected. The result is a series that asks questions about justice, truth, forgiveness and what it really means to do the right thing.
