When Phil Robertson passed away in May of 2025 at the age of 79, his loved ones remembered and celebrated him as “the rock of our family.” But that wasn’t always the case.
Long before the “Duck Dynasty” patriarch delighted millions of television fans with his no-nonsense personality, dry humor, and “Faith, family, ducks… in that order” motto, his early struggles with alcoholism and infidelity nearly tore his family apart.
“I rebelled against God every way I could. Commode-hugging drunkenness, lust, greed, anger — I knew them all too well,” Phil once said. “I let the enemy of my soul tempt me to become my own god, and for a long time, I didn’t know how to find my way back. If not for [my wife] Miss Kay and [my sister] Jan refusing to give up on me, I don’t know where I’d be.”
Phil and Miss Kay were high school sweethearts and got pregnant, then married, before Kay even graduated. But their early years together proved difficult, and the former Louisiana Tech University quarterback turned to a life of sin and chaos.
As things spiraled out of control, Phil abandoned his family, leaving Miss Kay to raise their sons on her own. And while many told her to give up on her husband, she continued to pray that God would intervene.
“She’s the best woman there is. She didn’t just stand by me through bad times and worse — she fought for me and for our boys when everyone told her to leave,” Phil said. “The Lord never gives up on you, and she made sure I knew it.”
Thankfully, through a miraculous series of events, God got ahold of Phil (in a bar, no less) and transformed his life. That story of Phil’s dark beginnings and eventual redemption is the foundation of the hit family film “The Blind,” which is streaming now on EKKL, and features some newly added content that wasn’t seen in theaters.
“Amidst all the chaos, there was this moment when the freedom that I thought I wanted no longer felt like freedom,” Phil recalled. “I actually felt trapped inside of a person that I no longer wanted to be.”
“I would be lying if I told you that I wasn’t a bit nervous and embarrassed by [sharing my dark past in ‘The Blind’],” he added. “But I find peace in that fact that I know how the story ends. It begins and ends with the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords.”
Once Phil gave his life to Jesus, he never looked back. And he dedicated his life to helping other lost souls find hope and true freedom in Christ. His transformation impacted not only his own life and the lives of his family, but of countless others as well. He truly believed that “you’re never too far gone that Jesus couldn’t reach you wherever you are.”
“Someone asked me who plays Jesus in our movie,” Phil once said. “Well, there’s no actor playing him in The Blind. But there’s no doubt he’s the main character — in the movie, in my life, and for all eternity.”
